Shipping containers are available in different conditions depending on their age, previous use, cosmetic appearance and intended application. Understanding these classifications can help you choose a container that is appropriate for your storage, transport, construction or project requirements.

New / One-Trip

Premium Condition

New or one-trip containers are generally the newest condition commonly available in the shipping container market. The term “one-trip” typically refers to a container manufactured overseas and transported with cargo on its initial journey before being offered for sale.

Typical Characteristics

  • Very limited previous cargo use
  • Generally cleaner overall appearance than older used containers
  • Doors, locking gear and seals should normally show minimal wear
  • Flooring normally has limited operational wear
  • Suitable for buyers who place greater importance on appearance
  • Often selected for conversions, offices and long-term projects
Minor scratches, paint marks, handling marks or small dents may still occur during manufacturing, loading, transport and delivery. “New” does not necessarily mean cosmetically flawless.

Cargo Worthy

Functional Used Condition

Cargo Worthy containers are used containers that are generally intended to remain structurally serviceable for cargo-related applications, subject to the specific container's condition and any applicable inspection requirements.

Typical Characteristics

  • Previously used in freight or logistics operations
  • May show dents, scratches, surface corrosion or faded paint
  • Doors and locking mechanisms should remain functional
  • Flooring may display marks and wear from previous cargo use
  • Generally suitable for storage and many commercial applications
  • Usually offers a balance between functionality and purchase cost
A container described as Cargo Worthy should not be assumed to be free from cosmetic wear. Appearance can vary significantly between individual units.

Wind & Watertight

Storage Focused

Wind and Watertight containers are typically older used containers intended primarily for static storage. Their purpose is generally to provide an enclosed space that protects suitable stored items from normal external weather exposure.

Typical Characteristics

  • Usually older than typical Cargo Worthy units
  • May have noticeable dents and exterior cosmetic wear
  • Surface rust and previous repairs may be visible
  • Doors should remain usable, though operation may require more effort
  • Flooring may show significant previous-use marks
  • Often selected for general static storage requirements
Wind and Watertight is primarily a functional description rather than a cosmetic grade. Buyers should expect visible evidence of previous use.

Refurbished

Improved Used Condition

Refurbished containers are used containers that have undergone selected maintenance, repair or cosmetic improvement. The exact refurbishment work can differ between individual containers and should be confirmed from the relevant product description.

  • Surface preparation or rust treatment where required
